EC400A Estrous Detector is an accurate instrument dedicated to exact time determination for pigs, dogs and foxes during the ovarian cycle when ovulation occurs. The Estrous Detector monitors changes in electrical resistance of the vaginal mucus. Measurements are taken simply by properly inserting the probe in the vagina and taking the reading. No prior technical knowledge on the part of the operator is required. The big, easy-to-grip handle ensures that the instrument is not easily kicked out of the user's hand and the easy-to-read display makes reading the results more convenient.

Recommendations
a. Daily measurement is not needed provided the record is over 300 units.
b. Daily measurement is required when the record has lowered below 300 units. Evident decline may appear after several days’ remaining of this state. When the record starts going up, it is advised to do measurement more frequently (i.e.2, 3 or 4 times per day) to determine more accurately the ovulation period. For instance, measurement can be done respectively at breakfast time, lunch time and afternoon and dinner time as well, which serves as an important role especially for those female dogs with short ovulation period and limited time to accept mating.
c. As the below graph shows, it is of great importance to record when sudden maximal electric resistance and electric resistance decline occur. The following 1 to 2 days after the lowest point in this curve is the optimum mating time. Farm workers are advised to record the false foot point before real one showing up so as to recognize conditions with fairly low electric resistance more easily 3 to 5 days before the estrum period.
